Fillings and Restorations

Unfortunately, most cavities, in the early phase are symptom-less and therefore cannot be detected without examination by a dentist. However, at times, caries may cause the problem of food lodgement, mild pain during chewing, sensitivity or unaesthetic appearance (black spot).

When do you need Filling and Restoration?
You need a filling when tooth decay has resulted a hole (cavity) on a tooth surface. If you don't get a filling, the cavity will worsen. It may cause pain and then an abscess. This may lead to severe problems, such as bone loss.

Why should a damaged or decayed tooth be restored?
  • A tooth is repaired to protect the part of the tooth that has become exposed by the decay or injury.
  • It can prevent the loss of a tooth, since decay may spread and destroy the tooth.
  • Restoration permits normal eating and chewing.
  • Restored teeth should reinstate, or improve upon, the appearance of teeth and the face.

Different Types of Filling and Restoration
There are primarily three types of filling and restoration:

  1. Silver Amalgam:
This is considered obsolete and not practiced anymore beacuse of the following reasons:
    • It is unaesthetic
    • It has a toxic effect of Mercury
    • Causes leakage and secondary caries beneath filing.
  2. Glass Ionomer Cement (White Colored Filling):
This is also called white colored filling as white filling material is used. On a clinical level, GIC is highly acceptable as it releases fluoride which re-mineralizes teeth. GIC is a good option in cases that require filling and restoration of smooth surfaces.
  3. Cosmetic Filling (Tooth Colored Filling)
While traditional dentistry revolves around health and hygiene of the mouth, cosmetic dentistry focuses on beautifying the appearance of the mouth and teeth of a person. Cosmetic filling, in particular, believes in using tooth-colored fillings to enhance the oral aesthetics. It can be said that Cosmetic Filling is the best option available as it has good strength and is durable. Since Cosmetic Filling boasts high aesthetic value, it is also used for smile corrections such as for closing the gap between two front teeth, straightening the bucked out or rotated teeth within a few minutes to an hours’ time; which is commonly known as smile make-over.
