Root Canal Treatment

What is Root Canal Treatment?
The term ‘Root Canal’ is used to describe the natural cavity within the center of the tooth where the pulp and the nerve of the tooth reside. A root canal treatment (RCT) is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or has become infected causing pain. During a root canal procedure, the root canal of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. After the treatment, the tooth will serve its functions and the pain will efface.

Why Does Tooth Pulp Needs to Be Removed?
When a tooth's nerve tissue or pulp is damaged, it breaks down and bacteria begins to multiply within the pulp chamber. The bacteria and other decayed debris can cause an infection or abscessed tooth. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms at the end of the roots of the tooth. An abscess occurs when the infection spreads all the way past the ends of the roots of the tooth.

What are the symptoms that indicate that a Root Canal Treatment is needed?
There are cases when no signs or symptoms are present to tell that a root canal treatment is necessary. However, you must rush to a dentist if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Extreme toothache while eating, talking or application of pressure
  • A constant or frequent pimple on the gums
  • Tenderness and swelling of the gums
  • Darkening or discolouration of a tooth
  • Extended sensitiveness to warm or cold temperatures

Types of Root Canal Treatment
There are 3 types of root canal treatment:

  1. Primary Root Canal - It is performed to cure infections or inflammations in root canal.
  2. Secondary Root Canal - It is also known as re-RCT and is performed when the primary root canal treatment does not fix the damage completely.
  3. Apicoectomy - It is performed when standard root canal treatments are ineffective. It is a micro-surgical process that removes the infected tissue as well as the tip of the root.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
The first and foremost benefit is, Root canal offers relief to the excruciating pain that a person might have been suffering from dental caries. When a root canal is performed, the pulp tissue is removed, relieving the patient of any pain symptom. Secondly, a root canal is given to a tooth in lieu of a tooth extraction. This means that instead of losing your teeth, you get to salvage it, and enjoy its function in the mouth.

Limitations of Root Canal Treatment
In case you are having an infected and painful tooth, you may need to take antibiotics before or during root canal. Pain killers may be prescribed by the dentist if needed. After RCT, cap or onlay is mostly recommended to restore the function of tooth and give additional strength to the tooth so that it can withstand chewing forces. Post RCT, the sore tooth takes a little more time in healing for diabetic patients.
