Treating Malalignment (Braces)

Malalignment or Crooked Teeth refers to the state where the arrangement of teeth deviates from the normal relation in the line of the dental arch. This may be the reason of unpleasant smile or occlusal discrepancy, leading to early wearing of tooth structure, resulting in TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) problems. In short, it is a dental anomaly that we so often see in kids around us. Such tooth malalignments are also evident within adults if the condition is not treated at an young age.

What is the Reason behind Malalignment?
There are two types of malalignment- Tooth-spacing malalignment and Tooth-crowding malalignment. Tooth-spacing malalignment is spacing between teeth and Tooth-crowding malalignment is teeth overlapping each other.

The Effects of Malalignment
Unpleasant Smile
Smile is something that does a world of good to our confidence. Malaligned teeth lead to unpleasant smile which can affect person’s social relationships.

Bad breath
The most immediate effect of malalignment is bad breath(halitosis). Due to the unnatural alignment of teeth, plaques are formed and it becomes difficult to remove them. As a result, the existing bacteria survives and emits bad odour.

Improper Bite
Malaligned teeth also lead to improper bite which can interfere with a person’s ability to chew and speak properly. Besides, it can also cause abnormal wear to the enamel of the teeth. If a person’s teeth are protruding and/or the upper and lower teeth don't come together comfortably (called malocclusion, or a bad bite), it can lead to jaw problems.

Periodontal disease
Another common effect of malalignment is periodontal disease. Gum inflammation can begin with redness or bleeding when brushing your teeth. If left untreated for too long, it can lead to receding gums, tissue damage, formation of pockets and tooth loss.

The Remedies for Malalignment
1. Braces
  • Dental braces are used to align and straighten teeth by moving the teeth from their original position to the position of alignment
  • Braces can be either metallic or cosmetic. Dental braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help widen the palate or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping the teeth and jaws.
  • Patients might need to wear the braces for a period of 6 months to 2 years, depending upon the amount of correction required.

2. Clear Path
  • Clearpath aligners are the new trend in orthodontics that has garnered decent popularity. Clear path aligners are removable and made of medical grade plastic appliances. Patients can do away with the hassle of wearing braces while undergoing treatment for teeth malalignment.
  • Clearpath aligners work exactly like the traditional braces and can be removed while having food. Clearpath aligners correct the teeth to be in the real position. Wearing the aligners for a minimum of 20 hours a day can give the best result.
  • Clearpath aligners take shorter period of treatment when compared to the traditional braces. Clearpath aligners are tailor-made to fit each individual's mouth.

Why Clearpath aligners?
  • Clearpath aligners are invisible.
  • Clearpath aligners are removable and can be removed while consuming food.
  • These are easy-to-use and doesn't require any special care to maintain them.
  • The process of cleaning clearpath aligners are simple.
  • It is the best solution for everyone as it help them avoid social inhibitions.
