Wisdom Tooth Removal

A wisdom tooth is the rearmost of the three molars per quadrant. It appears between the age of 16 to 25, making it the last of all teeth to come out. However, they have been labelled as the most impacted teeth in the human mouth because of the lack of space for the tooth to erupt and grow properly.

If a wisdom tooth grows partially, comes out at an awkward angle or gets trapped in your jawbone, it can lead to a severe amount of pain, leading to infection and caries in adjacent teeth as well. That is the time when dentists pull out the wisdom tooth.

What to Expect after the Surgery?
There is usually little or no pain after the surgery under coverage of medication.

What are the Precautions?
Although the dentist will provide a thorough list of do-s and don’t-s for the first few days , it is always better to know what you are expected to do beforehand.

  1. Brush the operated area very carefully.
  2. You need to relax for a day.
  3. Drink a lot of fluids, and eat soft food items like soup, rice and pasta.
  4. Take the prescribed medicines on time, and call your dentist if you catch a fever or the swelling doesn’t improve.

  1. Avoid smoking as it decreases the healing rate.
  2. Avoid using a straw while drinking fluids or eating soft food. Sucking too hard may cause the blood to clot or loosen.
  3. Avoid rinsing your mouth too harshly as it may open the operated area.
  4. Avoid lying on a flat surface as it may prolong bleeding. Lift your head up using pillows.
  5. Avoid any strenuous physical activity for at least a day .
  6. Avoid hot and hard food for a day

Myth Buster:

  • Replacement of Wisdom tooth not needed as it is considered as a vestigial part of the body.
